if I were Filipino

(and sometimes I

wish I were) or at

least Philippine-

I might look out

at a sky that still

surprises and say,

That is bughaw

of brightest, well,

And you might

say, next-to-me

Philippine friend,

That is so sweet

that you remember.

Although, dear,

your pronunciation

is atrocious.  Well,

I could try it in

and would then

butcher words

To which you say,

as you do, That’s

all right, I’ll take

your hand in

whatever word you

To which I might

sigh in what I’m

sure is unearned

We look at the day

of bughaw, our

language loyalty.
