Tree of Life
The soul must be amazing
Some say it’s like a bird
And why not
I don’t mean a matter for debate
I mean the spirit that’s inside us
That leaves us when
We can bear no more
Where it catches next, I do not know
Branches in a tree
What has it for keeping
I think it is somewhere
I guess it might be doctrine
And so for argument
To say it owns eternal

And there are people, you just have to listen to them to know that if they were born with a soul it fled years ago, looking for a more hospitable residence.
Perhaps having a soul is what torments us. Animals don’t worry about right and wrong, they just do what they have to. We have guilt and shame or nothing at at (except a clinical name), that perhaps comes from that extra something or other you imagine caught in the branches of a tree, free as a bird.

Yes, too many people act as if they haven’t got a soul or don’t want one or it shouldn’t bother them or what have you. Then it becomes the repositor of shame and guilt. How many feel that way who needn’t? How many have no feeling who should? if there is a soul or spirit, I’d like it to be free. Not free of conscience but of the imprisonments we take on. I’m drawn to the idea that the soul has left some to find a better place, it was kept so badly. Frankly (tragically, maddeningly), that would explain some people.
