The Irony of Summer
After the first official day
In late June,
The daytime will be
Narrowing toward winter
My child mind
Thought the long days
Could not end, and might
We have some more, please?
And we did
My grown-up mind
Is, however, taxed
Imposing accuracy and will
Since the longer light of summer
Will go more briefly
To each sunset

Summer is to my thinking a bit like Christmas. We anticipate its arrival for months and it vanishes all too quickly.

That’s an apt comparison. As a child, a student, and a teacher, I’ve often felt that way.
Hoping you’re very well!

I am, thank you. You stay safe and well, also.

I wonder how many people get that pessimistic feeling when the summer solstice arrives and the days start getting shorter. I guess that’s why we should always live the moment.

I doubt that children feel so down about the shortening daytime of summer. I think, as you say, they’re invested in the moment. I probably compound the irony because I’m looking forward to my favorite season, fall.
I hope you have a truly pleasant summer, Len!
