We should have

a good weekend.  We

deserve it.  Not everyone

will have one because

those will work

to keep the power

on and

other things.  So

there’s the possibility

for rest and joy in

good and homely things.

We should permit

Our gratitude.  Happy

Saturday and Sunday,

friend.  If

not free, then

when you have

a long break later on.

Wonderful Counselor

x

Should we meet with God

I shall be glad

I might become chagrined

At what God will tell you

While I’m there

But I’m sure the conversation

Will be necessary

There might be understanding and

Reconciliation

Our lives on Earth an untrue experience

Now washed and cleared

The dark glass clean

Through which, if we all will,

All forgiven

Story Time, Please

Story Time, Please

x

Oof, I’m tired

Aren’t you tired?

If you’re energized, please

Let me know

Maybe chocolate

Inspiration from a movie

Or a book

An entertaining story

From someone who

Tells stories well

x

I like storytelling

I like listening

I like to think of people

Gathered ‘round tended fires

From ancient times

To hear from a bard

(roving poet)

Some other teller

Adding historically to lore

More urgently, to move us

With the tried

Or taking chances

Now

x

God’s will

I treat it like a puzzle

A mystery

A riddle

x

The prize

For being smart enough

For endurance

For cleverness I don’t really possess

Is success and later on

Salvation

I win at last

x

Except I think, liturgically,

That the truth is not in me

Or anyone who thinks and contrives

Philosophy this way

x

God is not a puzzle

(I like puzzles

and I hope you do)

There is a clarity

Like the still waters

God takes us beside

Willing

To point out the deep parts

x

Skywriting isn’t necessary

(relief for Dorothy)

Read the code for life inside the books

Or listen

Listen, anyway

It’s easy

As it’s easy

x

There are commandments

There are two prioritized

There is a parable of sheep and goats

(poor goats)

x

These are enough

To take us through the day

A season

A life

And should we like to choose

Life after

x

Mysticism, symbolism

Are for other verses

So to coin a phrase

That serves the here and now

x

That’s all, folks

Contemplatives Are Due on Maple Street

x

God speaks to me each day, though

I must admit

II don’t know what that means

I mean

Sometimes I hear the words

Sometimes it’s a nudge

I suppose a shove would be too much

I’d lose the love in that

And think it

Something else with chagrin

(and from the gravel)

x

I’d like to be an everyday sort of mystic

The kind a hobbit might accept

Have food,

A glass of wine,

Smoke a pipe

Then listen for the words that the

Spirit dictates

And hope I’m not sent to Mordor

On assignment

x

A contemplative with wide windows

Sunlight, nighttime

Time for clouds

All through which to contemplate

World enough and time

As the saying goes

From Andrew Marvell’s poem

x

This would do for a style

It would keep me in the suburbs

Or small towns,

In cities or on farms or

Or in other places near

Or far away

There Could Be Light

(x = space)

x

x

There Could Be Light

x

Lord,

I have not listened

I have not loved with a loving heart

But with a larcenous heart

Love for sale

I kept it mercenary

And in other matters

I know I’m not rich

I’m not talking about money

But the other ways in which we thieve

Each other

When we’re tempted

When we’re frightened

When the need is so deep

Or so it seems

Could be illness

Could be we make it so

x

I do not know the path

Before me

Even that there is one

For I have left the way

That had light for

The one walking

In anything like truth

x

There is no light

I am lost

x

I have stopped

I cannot move

The lack of light feels like

A weight,

Though that might be delusion

For how can nothing weigh us down?

How did I feel substance

In the light,

Which did not weigh me down?

x

Well, I’m speaking to you now

There was a spark

Left in my mind

I can’t talk of value with

The one who gave me life

But there is life

Maybe you’ll show me

Speak through one sense

Or all my senses

Correct my course

Give me one

Since I have no direction

And it seems no power

And I have a need

(real need)

To find my light

To find my way

Lord, love a duck

It’s an expression or the title

Of a show

My roommate and I

Used to pass it back and forth

On birthdays

Happy Birthday, Lord Luvaduck

A USA way to have a title

x

This was in school

He did well

I did well

I hated it

But liked him

His strength and creativity

His creativity

Intelligent as he was tall

I’m not sure what that means

Except that he was six-and-a-half

Feet tall

And maybe a little more

I liked his parents, too

And his brother

Also very smart

x

I wish we’d stayed in touch

And we did, a little

We wrote Happy Birthday to each other

And I tried to say something clever

(he was clever)

Then and now and then

I tried

To let him know I cared

x

He had

A good, steady career

And was much-loved at his workplace

It said so on the website

x

We got old

He got sick

He died

A couple of years ago

There was no one to tell me

I had to find out

Recently

I suppose in a world

In which electrons carry messages

More so than people speaking

Out loud,

This must happen

x

He went by Bill

I miss him

I can so easily

See him across the desk

Smart man

Faithful

He liked Dad’s root beer

We watched ‘70s television

We met onstage

Roommating was his idea

Good idea

x

x

“Lord love a duck!” is an expression of astonishment and relief; also the title of a novel, said novel used to make a feature film

[I used electrons to find this out]

After Rain

(x = space)

x

x

After Rain

x

I don’t what to say

There are so many things

I do not know

Movements and people

The inside health of the world

Or the root of evil

x

I could depict a scene

Go to a local park

Or look outside

It’s cooler now, less hazy

A clarity of all the scenes in town

For good or ill

x

Maybe I want

To say something more

Without pedantry

Though to moralize is human

I can only hope for reason

And some fairness to all sides

To win out

In me

x

You

Them

Us

x

Well, it’s the weekend

The heatwave has receded for a while

I have nothing planned

Maybe I’ll take a drive to nowhere

And come back

Richer in at least one way

Than when I left

x

I should walk

x

And you should have your time

I hope it’s good

You need something good

And are so worthwhile

And so deserving

There, moralizing after all

But I’m on your side

A fan

Larger (wider),

An advocate for peace

(smart, not stupid)

Planetwide

For us

x

Understanding venial

Praying for mortal

x

Maybe there’s something

Pursuable,

What is reasonable

With an ingredient of wonderful

Something kinder today

There is kindness in the world

“A kinder, gentler nation”

Is derided as a message from

The Republican President

Of the USA

x

Prosaically,

I wonder if we couldn’t have

Kindness and gentleness

And the like

And use more today

Or ever, really

Looking back (supplementing history

and stories),

Having today,

Looking ahead

x

The reaction is to see these things

As weak,

Yet that love that lasts

And joy after sorrow

Are the strongest

And if we can care in a divisive,

Bitter world,

Then we are strong

x

Hate is easy

We yell or spit or hit or stab or shoot

Then avoid the consequences

All sounds pretty cowardly

To me

And if I do these

Then I am that coward

x

Mercy “is not strained” (neither forced

nor artificial)

it drops (behaves) like “gentle rain

from heaven”

Our heatwave is breaking

We could have more of that

The literal kind

x

As for the metaphor,

Mercy

(kindness, gentleness)

Is something that we all

Could try

To bring relief

Like rain on dry ground (metaphor)

To change the world (not a metaphor)
