The Game of Life

x

I’m not ready

I wasn’t ready for my

Comprehensives

I did fine

I wasn’t ready

For my mother to be sick

I did what I could

I contributed

She rallied

I won’t be ready

For the next big thing,

I think in children’s media called

The NBT

I doubt we’re ready

For most things,

You know?

They happen anyway

And we respond

We do well

We don’t

We try

We retreat

We come out again

x

We are changed

For the next time

Though it might not be

In kind

But we pick up things

They get tucked away

Consequently,

And whether consciously or not,

We can reach into the drawer

Of the file cabinet

Pull open the door

Of the mind palace

At a little more

Since in the keep

As in the world

There are treasures

Set from the beginning

And we’re always

On the hunt

Solving the riddle

Finding other puzzles

Finding keys

x

Life, folks

That’s what we got

In all this

Storied

You know

The living parable

It actually happened

When soldiers

Were given leave

To drink

From a nearby stream

And some lay down

Their weapons

While prostrate

Lapped the water

x

These were sent home

x

Some knelt

By the water

Clutching weapons in one hand

While with the other

Reaching down to cup the water

Sipped while keeping watch

Around

x

These were kept

For the coming battle

x

I often think of this

From Sunday School

And cup the water

When I can

Multi-Universing

x

You know,

With one mistyping

It becomes the thirty-ninth of August

While maybe

On another world that

Tilts only a little differently,

It is that day

For real

x

And our two worlds will need

Adjusting, once

Interstellar communion

Has begun

x

For now, inside out heads,

Where we travel and negotiate

Our future

Planet-faring selves,

We might make welcome places

For all we may discover

That will change us

In good ways if we’re ready and

Thankfully

coda

x

We can go

If we send our best

And a moral code

I don’t mean a crazy code

I don’t mean a conservative code

I don’t mean a liberal code

I mean a human code

Inspired by what we understand

As loving and wise divinity

x

You think practicality

Will take us, and it won’t

For we all know that machines

Of all kinds

Work fine

Until they don’t

Apology

Apology

Sometimes I look into sky

There can be clouds

More viscerally when it’s stars

We see bucolic things

And we should

But sometimes it falls back on me

The sky, the stars

And if one can feel vertigo

When sitting still

Well

I’ve tried to imagine it all

And it has smacked back on me

The universe, as if I’m told

Cannot take me now

Don’t even try

It’s not yours

Someday, maybe

You’ll know your place

And your way around
